Philippe Barla has obtained his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1994. He joined Université Laval (Québec, Canada) immediately after graduation. His research fields are industrial organization and environmental economics. For several years, he worked on competition in the airline industry. He has also done some research on the relationship between environmental regulation and productivity. Since 2003, he has been involved in research projects on energy consumption in the transportation sector and especially on the impact of public policy for improving energy efficiency.
He is currently director of the Center for Data and Analysis in Transportation (CDAT) a research group studying energy consumption in the transportation sector. Some of his works have been published in the following journals: Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Journal of Transportation Economics and Policy, Transportation Research, International Journal of Industrial Organization and European Economic Review. He has worked on research projects for Natural Ressources Canada, Transport Québec, l'Agence de l'efficacité énergétique, le Ministère du développement durable, de l'environnement et des parcs.
